What does CALIPSO do?

The letters in CALIPSO stand for Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation mission. This satellite studies how clouds and tiny particles in the air, called aerosols, affect Earth's weather, climate, and air quality. Information from this satellite helps to create 3D views of clouds and aerosols in the atmosphere. NASA’s partner in CALIPSO is France’s space agency, CNES, which operates the satellite.
