What does CYGNSS do?

The letters in the CYGNSS mission stand for the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System mission. The Global Navigation Satellite System provides our cell phones and cars with locations for navigation; the CYGNSS mission has eight satellites that measure how these signals bounce off of the ocean. Because winds make the ocean choppy and distort the signal, CYGNSS can remotely sense ocean wind speeds, especially during hurricanes and can help improve forecasts.
